CDC Develops New 
Physical Activity Framework
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have developed an innovative framework designed to guide national efforts to increase physical activity in communities across the U.S.  The new Physical Activity Framework comes in response to the national inactivity epidemic, and the significant economic costs accompanying these high levels of inactivity.  The Framework outlines the following 5-step action driven framework for creating lasting change.

1. DELIVER Programs that Work
2. MOBILIZE Partners
3. MESSAGE Active Lifestyles
4. TRAIN Leaders for Action
5. DEVELOP Technologies, Tools, and Data that Matter

The approach set forth in the Framework is very much in line with the vision of the National Physical Activity Plan, that one day, all Americans will be physically active, and they will live, work and play in environments that encourage and support regular physical activity.  The Framework also places specific emphasis on the fact that everyone has access and opportunities to be active. Similarly, the latest version of the NPAP focuses on inclusion and diversity, highlighting the fact that physical activity opportunities need to be made available to all American's regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, physical, cognitive or sensory ability, and geography. Recent Happenings in Physical Activity and Public Health:
AIMS Press Releases Special Issue Focused on Sedentary Behavior
AIMS Press recently released a special issue dedicated to "Advances in Sedentary Behavior Research and Translation". The twenty included papers cover a variety of topics, populations of interest, and research designs.  Manuscripts range from "Where to Sit? Type of Sitting Matters for the Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score" to "Stand by Me: Qualitative Insights into the Ease of Use of Adjustable Workstations".  To browse the entire special issue visit the AIMS Press webpage.
New Collection of Pedestrian and Bicycle Network Case Studies 
In this second volume of "Case Studies in Delivering Safe, Comfortable, and Connected Pedestrian and Bicycle Networks" the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center highlights 93 of the latest projects in use and development nationwide. The report includes project summaries, maps, and photos in an effort to inspire other communities to improve their respective pedestrian and bicycle networks.  
Lessons Learned from the Every Place Counts Design Challenge
The U.S Department of Transportation released a report highlighting outcomes and lessons learned from the Every Place Counts pilot program.  The Every Place Counts program leveraged resources at every level of government to enhance mobility, equity, and access in local communities. The full report, which includes strategies for engaging the public, improving health, and building buy in, can be found on the U.S DOT webpage.  
Canada Explores New UpnGo Program to Create Culture of Workplace Wellness
Canadian non-profit ParticipACTION has long been dedicated to helping Canadians sit less and move more.  Their latest program, UpnGo, focuses on increasing physical activity in workplace settings. Promising 2016 pilot data from selected companies, and plans for dissemination, can be found here.
New Study Examines the Impact of Stand-Biased and Seated Classrooms on Childhood Obesity
An article published in the American Journal of Public Health last fall examines the impact that standing-biased classroom designs can have on childhood obesity.  The two year study found statistically significant decreases in BMI percentiles for students exposed to the standing desks for both years.  More information about the study and results can be found through this post by GlobalPAnet.
America Walks Seeks Applicants for 2017 Walking College
The America Walks! Walking College is an online educational program designed for walkable community advocates looking to gain necessary skills and information to increase walkability in their communities.  To learn more and discover if this is the right opportunity for you, check out the Walking College webpage today.  Applications are due February 28th.  
How Do American Voters Feel About Public Health?
The latest National Survey of Registered Voters on Public Health released in January indicates high levels of support for physical activity initiatives. Promising findings show that "74 percent of people highly support providing enough time -- during the school day and afterschool - for kids' physical education, physical activity or community sports", while "60 percent highly support planning for a building more parks, walking and biking trails and other recreation areas for people to be physically active in all communities."  Check out other key findings in this summary from the Trust for America's Health.

New Year, New Resolutions
The beginning of a new year means an increased focus on physical activity and fitness for many Americans.  The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, along with advocates from the Guard Your Health campaign, weighed in on how help health related New Year's Resolutions stick.  Their contributions to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Blog "Be Active Your Way" include 4 Ways to Stay Health This Year and Out with the Old: Making Physical Activity Resolutions Stick.  
NPR Covers Release of Latest Recess Recommendations from SHAPE America
This NPR story covers the newest recess recommendations from SHAPE America. Based on the latest evidence-based practices, these new documents include information related to recess planning and policy, space assessment, and specific activity suggestions.  The article highlights some of the biggest issues facing U.S. schools along with stories from schools working towards the recommendations.  
NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art Offers the Museum Workout
Looking for a new and unique way to incorporate physical activity in your community? The Metropolitan Museum of Art has done just that!  Read this NYTimes article to learn more about this interesting new collaboration bringing fitness to the museum.  
Study Examines Mortality Data of Weekend Warriors 
This Washington Post article compares mortality rates in people who work out once or twice a week with those who do not exercise at all.  Summarizing findings from a newly published Scottish study analyzing cohorts from both the Health Survey for England and the Scottish Health Survey, the article reports a 30% lower mortality rate in amongst the Weekend Warriors.
